(AP) — Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has reiterated his concerns about railroad safety and scolded the industry for not doing more to improve since last year's fiery Ohio derailment. In a new letter to the freight railroads' main trade group, Buttigieg acknowledged that railroads say they are committed to safety. But he said too often regulators encounter resistance when trying to get the industry to do more to improve safety. And he said the Federal Railroad Administration's statistics don't show safety improving significantly over the past decade. But Buttigieg said that with two workers killed last year in rail yard accidents he's still concerned about those incidents.

With Boeing facing multiple government investigations, the company needs to make “a serious transformation” around its safety and manufacturing quality, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Monday. That followed the company's admission that it couldn't find records that the National Transportation Safety Board sought for work done on the panel at a Boeing factory. “We will continue to cooperate fully and transparently with all government investigations and audits, as we take comprehensive action to improve safety and quality at Boeing," the company said. Alaska Airlines said it is cooperating with the Justice Department investigation. She told a Senate committee that Boeing had repeatedly rebuffed her agency's attempts to get information ever since the blowout.

An intense weekend of campaigning, with the rivals both visiting the critical swing state of Georgia, laid out the stakes of their clash – as well as their strategies and vulnerabilities. Still, a successful State of the Union address can clarify a president’s purpose not just to voters – but to himself and his own campaign. Backstage in Georgia, Trump met the parents of Laken Riley, the 22-year-old nursing student who was allegedly killed by an undocumented migrant. Biden’s campaign knows it must do more to defuse concerns about his capacity to fully serve a second term. “Here’s a guy who’s kicking off his general election campaign up the road with Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Why checked bag fees are at record highs
  + stars: | 2024-03-02 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Checked bag fees are hitting record highs as airlines up the ante. So an airline can save $75 million in tax fees off its $1 billion revenue in domestic checked-bag fees. The introduction of bag fees was also a response to the rise of low-price carriers like Spirit in the United States and Ryanair in Europe. But airlines kept the bag fees in place and even raised them in an effort to make up for the lost revenue from change fees. Bag fees have been a political punching bag.

The Biden administration announced on Thursday that it was proposing new regulations for how airlines must treat passengers in wheelchairs, an effort aimed at improving air travel for people with disabilities. Under the proposed rule, damaging or delaying the return of a wheelchair would be an automatic violation of an existing federal law that bars airlines from discriminating against people with disabilities. The Transportation Department said that change would make it easier for the agency to penalize airlines for mishandling wheelchairs. The proposed regulations would also require more robust training for workers who physically assist disabled passengers or handle their wheelchairs. “This new rule would change the way airlines operate to ensure that travelers using wheelchairs can travel safely and with dignity.”

A day after Trump's visit last year, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg went to East Palestine. But soon after the East Palestine derailment, some local officials began to criticize the Biden administration for the lack of a presidential visit. Biden issued an executive order requiring Norfolk Southern to pay for any long-term cleanup efforts. At a White House briefing this week, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden was traveling to East Palestine at the mayor's invitation. Deeter, a member of a local advocacy group, River Valley Organizing, hopes Biden's visit is more than a photo-op.

“Tesla has failed time and time again to address the failings in its defective self-driving software,” O’Dowd said Sunday in a statement. In a series of video tests by The Dawn Project, the cars run over a child-sized dummy on a school crosswalk and a fake baby in a stroller. The clips reportedly show two separate incidents involving Tesla cars with activated Autopilot features, according to The Dawn Project. The second ad alludes to an incident where “a self-driving Tesla blew past a stopped school bus,” injuring a child. According to O’Dowd, The Dawn Project set aside a bigger budget this year, anticipating they would purchase ad space in Sacramento.

Nevertheless, the Biden White House and legal team has taken pains to ensure compliance – an effort to highlight its commitment to ethics and draw a sharp contrast with Trump, who skirted the rule with abandon. And the Biden White House has issued “extensive guidance to and conducts trainings for agencies” on the Hatch Act and how to avoid potential missteps, the official said. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, for instance, delivered a speech to the Republican National Convention while on official travel in Jerusalem. “Voters of color can see themselves in leaders like Secretary Cardona, Secretary Fudge, and (EPA) Administrator (Michael) Regan. President Biden was intentional about assembling a Cabinet that reflects the diversity of America, and we continue to see how that diversity translates into real political strength,” he told CNN.

Nikki Haley was the only major presidential candidate to appear on the state's GOP primary ballot. AdvertisementDespite being the only currently running major candidate on the official state-run Republican presidential primary in Nevada, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley lost to the option "None of These Candidates." Importantly, if a candidate chooses to be apart of the state-run primary, the Nevada GOP said they will not be permitted to also caucus on February 8. For reasons not entirely clear, Haley signed up to be a part of the state-run primary in 2023, even though she could not win any delegates from it. As former President Donald Trump, the leading GOP candidate in the race, is signed up for caucus, Haley was the only major candidate on the Nevada primary's ballot.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg is weighing in on the use of Apple Vision Pro headsets on the road. He was remarking on a viral video appearing to show someone wearing a Vision Pro while driving a Tesla Cybertruck. That's the warning from US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg in response to a viral video seemingly showing a person wearing an Apple Vision Pro headset while driving a Tesla Cybertruck. Apple's user guide for the device says, "Apple Vision Pro has built-in safety features to help prevent collisions and falls, but it's also important to use the device in a safe manner. For example, don't run while wearing Apple Vision Pro, use it while operating a moving vehicle, or use it while intoxicated or otherwise impaired."

Videos being shared across social media this week depict an almost dystopian, futuristic scene: drivers of Teslas in Autopilot mode while wearing Apple Vision Pro headsets, seemingly unaware of the road in front of them. The videos led federal transportation officials to issue warnings. But are people really mindlessly riding around in Teslas in Autopilot mode, wearing Apple’s futuristic new goggles? Several of the videos taken in cars appear staged, and in many, it is clear that someone other than the driver is recording. Still, they seemed reckless enough for Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, to weigh in on social media.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden won the South Carolina primary on Saturday, the contest that revitalized his 2020 campaign and now has given him his first official victory in his bid for a second term. The Associated Press declared Biden the winner at 7:23 p.m. based on an analysis of initial vote results showing him with a decisive lead in key locations throughout the state. His only challengers on the ballot, U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and self-help author Marianne Williamson, trailed far behind. South Carolina was Biden’s first victory that year, after placing fourth in Iowa, fifth in New Hampshire and a distant second in Nevada. But Mr. Mayorkas is not as lonely as all that. Republicans have also filed articles of impeachment against his boss, President Biden, as well as Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland and Christopher A. Wray, the F.B.I. director, while threatening them against Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. Indeed, threats of impeachment have become a favorite pastime for Republicans following the lead of former President Donald J. Trump, who has pressed his allies for payback for his own two impeachments while in office. The chances of Mr. Mayorkas, much less Mr. Biden, ever being convicted in the Senate, absent some shocking revelation, seem to be just about zero, and the others appear in no serious danger even of being formally accused by the House.

New York CNN —Spirit Airlines could end up in bankruptcy and be forced out of business because of a federal court decision to block a proposed sale to JetBlue Airways, according to a note from an airline analyst. “We believe Spirit will first look for an alternative buyer, but another airline may get the same pushback [from antitrust regulators. Its fares prompted major airlines to offer a certain number of no-frills “basic economy” seats on their planes. It also prompted concerns that its purchase by JetBlue would lead to higher fares across the industry — concerns which resulted in the Justice Department’s antitrust case that blocked the deal. “While we are disappointed with this [court decision] outcome, we are confident in our strengths and strategy,” said a company statement sent to CNN.
